Supernatural: The Return of Castiel… And Bobby?

Last week at the Television Critics Association party, Supernatural executive producer Robert Singer spoke to the press about the return of the recently deceased Bobby Singer, played by actor Jim Beaver.  He confirmed what many fans were hoping.  “Jim will be back, in one form or another, this season,” Singer said to a reporter from Zap2it.com. “That’s probably as much as I’m going to say. The killing of Bobby was part of an overall idea this year of isolating the boys. It started with losing Castiel, then we went into a real, constant bonding with Bobby. We really built their relationship with Bobby this season, and then we ripped that away from them. We put them in a place they’ve really never been before, where they have no life supports, no lifelines, and no backups. They’re facing this huge monolithic evil, but they’re reduced to two lonely cowboys.”

And what about losing Castiel?  It’s been reported that Misha Collins will be reprising his role as the enormously popular character for a three episode arc, beginning with episode 317.  Jared Padalecki, who plays Sam Winchester on the show, recently spoke to E! Online about Castiel’s return, with more details than we’ve had up to this point. “He doesn’t come back as Castiel per say. When he and the boys see each other, it’s not like, ‘Oh, Sam and Dean!’ ‘Oh, Castiel!’ It’s amnesia of sorts.  He’s still got great powers and we seek him out because we have an inkling that something’s going on.”

It has yet to be confirmed whether or not Supernatural will be picked up by The CW for an eighth season, but either way it goes, Singer promises the ending of season seven will leave fans wanting more. “We like to be optimistic about the pickup,” he says, “So we’re going to write another cliffhanger ending, I think, and then just see what happens.”

Supernatural airs on The CW network every Friday at 9/8c.
